Nicked from my darling [info]grayscaled, as I attempt to not write a pretty emo post:

What's surprised you the most about me (if anything) since beginning to read my LJ (or when you met me IRL, for those who have)? Has anything about me been completely unexpected or have I always fit the picture of me you had in your head?

So. Random cable station (turns out to be Living) is on, and they're getting season one of Supernatural from this week, just about to start showing it.

First off - n'awww, baby Sam and Dean. Jared in particular looks so young.

But secondly this is the song on the trailer:

And it works crazy well.

Just saying.

Can't believe I'm going home tomorrow (already? :() Haven't even started packing but it shouldn't take me long. Have bought American candy for the work people and mum's birthday gift, plus souvenirish stuff for the family.

Just need to actually post the postcard I promised to send. Ahem.

Also considering paying up for some time on LJ. It's been two years since my 'screw them, they can't have my money' snit fit that resulted from the summer of strikeout and I feel that's probably enough time. Not sure if it's worth it though, it has been a while since I checked this in any reliable fashion.

Also - because I told her I would tell this to all of LJ: [info]grayscaled got pierced today. I went.

She cried like a little bitch. That is all.

So rarely is it me being the one reporting on the news.

But:

In a 10-1 decision, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declined to rehear the case of Dwight Whorley, a Virginia man whose criminal trial marked two firsts for the American justice system: the first conviction for possession of obscene Japanese manga, and the first for authoring pornographic fiction and sending it over e-mail.

But in a lengthy dissent, Judge Roger Gregory urged the Supreme Court to take up the case and reverse it.

“I am hard-pressed to think of a better modern day example of government regulation of private thoughts than what we have before us in this case: convicting a man for the victimless crime of privately communicating his personal fantasies to other consenting adults,” Gregory wrote.

The whole quote above is a link. In the interests of fullness Whorely was originally arrested because he had real explicit photos of children which yeah, I totally think he should rot for. E-mail part's more than a little concerning though.

I'm giving idle thought to doing a flist clearout. I don't check LJ all that often and there are people I haven't spoken to in years, who I don't remember repping to in years and who I don't remember having rep'd to me in forever that I might neaten off the flist. It's not an 'I hate you' thing, just an 'I rarely check my flist so would like it to contain only stuff I'm likely to respond to', sort of, type deal.

There are fandoms I was very active in when I started on LJ that I really don't do much with now and yeah, giving it thought. If I can make myself unlazy enough.

I'm off work for the next week, so much to do but I should have plenty rest time too. Ponder ponder.

So first Kim Manners from Supernatural and The X-Files dies and now Andy Hallet from Angel, who was only thirty-three.

What's going on with 2009? Seriously.

I have a largely philosphical question I'd really appreciate answers to - by all means link this to people you think might have something to say about it. It's pretty simple, really, and something I go through phases of doing a lot of thinking about.

What exactly *is* a 'friend' to you? Someone you hang out with, someone who's there for you, someone you're there for, something else...

It's relevant, honestly.

It shows how entirely out of it I've been that I only just found out about Kim Manners.

He was an awesomely talented guy, what a loss.

So I was doing my usual morning net surfing when I came across: Prop 8 - The Musical.

There's a bunch of celebs in it - Neil Patrick Harris, John C. Reilly, Jack Black, Sarah Chalke...etc. And it's gigglesome, well worth a watch.

So I found this meme in an old entry and I figured I'd do it again not so much because I was way into doing it but because I liked trying to guess other people's. Originally gakked from [info]matsujo9, I believe.

Step 1: Put your Media player on random.
Step 2: Post the first line(s) of the first 20 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 5: NO CHEATING (that goes for the guesser, too!)

Lines Behind Cut )

And I totally will check my flist to play along. Promise. Remaining answers posted tomorrow.

Ok so please forgive the random but I'm having a curious day.

A friend and I the other day were having a random discussion about main char lesbians and lesbian-centric fiction - the more mainstream fiction in particular. Also a little about gay and trans chars or gay and trans orientated fic but the lesbians, primarily.

Now character-wise I thought of a bajillion but for the canons themselves... well I'm kind of scratching my head and coming up way, way shorter than I would have thought.

Like seriously. Throw in just about everything Jeanette Winterson ever looked at, The L Word, Tipping the Velvet, If These Walls Could Talk 2, The Children's Hour and Sugar Rush (not sure if that crossed the ocean)... and there I ran out. Which I consider shameful because I swear I've read/seen/probably studied more than that.

So! Flist survey. Do you know any movies/tv/novels etc. that are mainstream(ish) that have a central char that's a lesbian or where the main plot (or one of them) focuses on lesbian issues? This isn't for any kind of academic pursuit, just my own curiousity. Feel free to point Friends Who'd Know or your own flists this way because I'm all ears, seriously.

ETA: I would like to know how the frick I forgot Fried Green Tomatoes. You may all smack me for that.

Give me a play list. 7-10 songs that fit this sentence -- you get to fill in the blank yourself:

"These songs always make me ______."

(Examples: These songs always make me dance. These songs always make me cry. These songs always make me happy. You get the idea.)

Then, spread the joy and see what other lists people come up with!
***

These songs always make me wake up )

Also, I got hooked into that dragon thing (for which I will always blame Karen and Mecca). The link to my lot is: http://dragcave.net/user/autumnchestnut

If you have five minutes and could please click 'view' by each egg I'd much appreciate it.

If you're on my friends list, I want to know 36 things about you. I don't care if we never talk, or if we already know everything about each other. You're on my list, so I want to know you better.

So the thing they forget to tell you is that going on holiday? IS A LOT OF HARD WORK. I mean you'd think it's as simple as book tickets, ensure you have a passport and spending money and go but oh no, never that easy.

I'm going to Thailand on Wednesday to stalk hang out with Dea. I'm currently about 1/4 of the way through packing and am currently washing the next lot of what needs to be packed but working out how much of everything you need (tops, bottoms, shoes, socks, underwear, toiltries, just-in-case meds, spending money...) is actually a bitch. And I'm sure it's a bitch even if you aren't an anally-retentive virgo with a organisation and research fetish. Come to think of it the fetish has probably taken the edge off of the worst of it for me.

But! There are visa things to check for your destination (and whee, don't need one) and visa things to check for your layover (and whee, don't need one of those either but it took four websites disagreeing with each other and two phone calls to be sure of that). And then there's exchange rates...now, praise the exchange rate to Thailand, for serious but it is so fortunate that Dea lives there because I'm spazzing as it is that I'm not bringing enough money, and I'm sure she's very, very tired of me asking. No matter how many times I read 'highly affordable' the fact is? I live in London dudes. Tell me on as many noted websites as you like that it's not just possible but *easy* to live on £6/day in Bangkok all you like, I'm still going to go "BUT THAT'S BARELY THE COST OF A TRAVEL CARD!"

(For Americans, I feel to offer comparison. When [info]testickles and I headed your way two summers back we were told repeatedly how utterly expensive New York was. We were told repeatedly and loudly how utterly expensive New York was. Tes and I budgeted accordingly - as though we were going to be holidaying in London. Now yes, NYC was pretty pricey compared to DE and PA when we were there. We both agreed, however, that London is worse. We both brought a lot of dollars home).

And then there's cultural stuff - what you should/shouldn't do and stuff. Which I'm actually not going to bitch about 'cause that stuff kind of fascinates me and to my mind is half the point of travelling, but I'm going to mention it for the people who that does stress out.

And then even though you've paid a few hundred for the ticket there's the fact that you have to call your airline a couple of days before and tell them you still intend to travel. I'd have thought the fact you'd given them said few hundred was proof enough of that...I'm a nice person, mostly, but I don't just hand out hundreds of pounds as gesture of good will, you know? So yes, you get to google their number, which turns out to be a couple continents away, then poke and prod and poke some more 'til you've got the local one. Fortunately my airline rule and once on the phone there's very little "Choose option 1-9, Press 5 if you want..." going on. I got a real live person pretty damn quickly, and she was completely nice. And dealt with my little stream of questions and double-checking with much patience.

Much kudos.

And malarials. Those bitches are expensive. Fortunately I work for a company with the best deal on them in the country, and whose policy is to pass savings like that onto the customer. Praise my job, for real. But there are also endless recommended jabs. And depending on which list of those you read I need ten or nothing. Helpful, huh?

Now this all said? I'm sure it's totally going to be worth it. I'm actually excited like a puppy about heading over there but I was sitting down this morning thinking about all the googling and calling I'd done, and money spent I never thought of initially, and I was like "Dude, holidays are effort."

This is my thought for the day.

So. The things I find while randomly online surfing.

Nostaligic perfumes. As in the do the different jelly bean scents, play dough, laudromat... They also do some more expected ones, but seriously.

Finally, after months, I remembered to update my paid LJ time.

I think I'm getting senile dementia in my early twenties. That should not have taken me five months to remember.

I think this may call for a new layout.
